Sport Specific Objectives

To maximize athletic performance through sport specific conditioning
Programs will target the following:
  • Muscular balance to best stabilize joints, prevent injury and facilitate performance
  • Enhance muscular endurance through anaerobic training and conditioning
  • Enhance cardiovascular potential
  • Increase general strength with emphasis on core
  • Maximize the power potential of the athlete through plyometric and power conversion training
  • Improve speed, agility, and reaction times of the athlete
  • Enhance flexibility

To provide the athlete with greater knowledge of the game

  • Goal setting
  • Mental training
  • Rules
  • Offensive and defensive strategies

To increase the awareness of the benefits of nutrition for sports performance

  • What foods are best for athletes?
  • When should these nutrients be consumed? (Pre-game, between game)
  • How much does the athlete need and in what proportions?
  • Should athletes take supplements? If so, what?
  • Importance of proper hydration

To improve the skill level of every athlete

  • Athletes will be provided with personal performance evaluations using video analysis software
 
OFFENSIVE PLAY: will include Hitting, Bunting and Base Running
Hitting
  • Maximize power
  • Increase contact %
  • Incorporate correct biomechanical sequencing
  • Improve visual aspects of hitting
  • Develop mental approach and philosophy towards hitting
Bunting
  • Institute proper bunting mechanics
  • Sacrifice bunt
  • Drag bunt
  • Slap bunt
  • Running Slap (for left-handed hitters)
Base Running
  • Improve running form and mechanics
  • Increase running speed
  • Improve base running skills
  • Employ explosive lead off and jumps off bases

DEFENSIVE PLAY: will include Overhand Throwing, Fielding
(All 9 Defensive Positions; including Ground balls/Fly Balls, Pitching/Catching & Team Play):
Overhand Throwing Mechanics
  • Institute proper biomechanical sequencing
  • Develop throwing power and improve accuracy
  • Develop quick release (decrease release time)
  • Improve power and accuracy of short (infield) throw
  • Improve power and accuracy of long (outfield) throw 
Fielding – all 9 defensive positions
Ground Balls
  • Proper footwork  & movement
  • Proper ball receiving techniques
  • Decrease transition time from catch to release
  • Improve “jump” on ball and range of field coverage
  • Forehand/Backhand development
Fly Balls
  • Improve “jump” on ball and range of field coverage
  • Proper ball receiving techniques
  • Footwork to gain momentum to make a long throw (from the outfield)
  • Proper footwork for turning to retreat on fly balls
Team Play
  • First and third situations
  • Cut-offs and relays
  • Coverage at all bases
  • Bunt play & special defences
